I’m honestly not sure how I’ve made it to bedtime without going completely insane, but I’m truly exhausted—not to mention mentally and emotionally drained—when the last of Lila’s favorite shows ends and I can safely escape to my bedroom without offending my uninvited house guest.

Seriously, how is this even happening?

Oh, right. Because I’ve spent the last twenty-eight years without ever being able to truly stand up to my twin sister.

Twenty-eight years of indulging a selfish, pampered tyrant will lead inevitably to a situation like this one—where I feel awkward and out of place in my own home.

“He’s pretty hot, you know,” she says as I’m slowly trudging from the sofa to my bedroom. “That guy you were with, I mean.”

As if there was any doubt who she meant.

“He’s really nice,” I say, hoping to end the conversation even though I know she wouldn’t have brought it up without a reason.

“Is he single?” She gives me a pointed look. “Because now that I’m on the market again, I should see if he wants to go out sometime. Can you give me his number?”

I stare at her in disbelief for several seconds before I finally realize she isn’t playing some kind of stupid, twisted joke on me. “No,” I shake my head. “I won’t give you his number. He and I were out on a date tonight.”

“But the two of you aren’t serious, are you? Is he your boyfriend?”

I open my mouth to say yes, but then I stop myself. He isn’t my boyfriend, even if it feels like he probably will be soon. And the last thing I want is to lie and give her any possible way to twist my words around.

“That’s what I thought,” she says with a triumphant sneer. “Face it, Calla, you know you can’t possibly keep a man like him happy. Not for more than a few minutes, anyway.”

She’s said some vile, hurtful things before, but this might be a new low. “Take that back,” I say quietly, barely able to keep from lunging across the sofa at her. “I won’t let you talk to me like that. Not here in my own apartment.”

I’m so angry I could scream, but I somehow manage to keep my tone even and my gaze steady as I stare her down. She might be able to walk all over me ninety-nine percent of the time, but not about this. Not when it comes to Dougal.

“Really, Calla?” She rolls her eyes. “Calm down. You know I’m just joking.” She stands up and flounces past me into my bedroom. “I thought you’d grow out of being so sensitive by now. Are you coming to bed?”

“I’d rather smother myself with a pillow,” I mutter under my breath.

“What was that?”

“Nothing, Lila,” I shake my head and sit back down on the sofa, resigned to giving up my bed for at least the foreseeable future. “Nothing at all.”
