Iâm honestly not sure how Iâve made it to bedtime without going completely insane, but Iâm truly exhaustedânot to mention mentally and emotionally drainedâwhen the last of Lilaâs favorite shows ends and I can safely escape to my bedroom without offending my uninvited house guest.
Seriously, how is this even happening?
Oh, right. Because Iâve spent the last twenty-eight years without ever being able to truly stand up to my twin sister.
Twenty-eight years of indulging a selfish, pampered tyrant will lead inevitably to a situation like this oneâwhere I feel awkward and out of place in my own home.
âHeâs pretty hot, you know,â she says as Iâm slowly trudging from the sofa to my bedroom. âThat guy you were with, I mean.â
As if there was any doubt who she meant.
âHeâs really nice,â I say, hoping to end the conversation even though I know she wouldnât have brought it up without a reason.
âIs he single?â She gives me a pointed look. âBecause now that Iâm on the market again, I should see if he wants to go out sometime. Can you give me his number?â
I stare at her in disbelief for several seconds before I finally realize she isnât playing some kind of stupid, twisted joke on me. âNo,â I shake my head. âI wonât give you his number. He and I were out on a date tonight.â
âBut the two of you arenât serious, are you? Is he your boyfriend?â
I open my mouth to say yes, but then I stop myself. He isnât my boyfriend, even if it feels like he probably will be soon. And the last thing I want is to lie and give her any possible way to twist my words around.
âThatâs what I thought,â she says with a triumphant sneer. âFace it, Calla, you know you canât possibly keep a man like him happy. Not for more than a few minutes, anyway.â
Sheâs said some vile, hurtful things before, but this might be a new low. âTake that back,â I say quietly, barely able to keep from lunging across the sofa at her. âI wonât let you talk to me like that. Not here in my own apartment.â
Iâm so angry I could scream, but I somehow manage to keep my tone even and my gaze steady as I stare her down. She might be able to walk all over me ninety-nine percent of the time, but not about this. Not when it comes to Dougal.
âReally, Calla?â She rolls her eyes. âCalm down. You know Iâm just joking.â She stands up and flounces past me into my bedroom. âI thought youâd grow out of being so sensitive by now. Are you coming to bed?â
âIâd rather smother myself with a pillow,â I mutter under my breath.
âWhat was that?â
âNothing, Lila,â I shake my head and sit back down on the sofa, resigned to giving up my bed for at least the foreseeable future. âNothing at all.â
